It's difficult to tell from this image, but these are a series of steps leading in and out of the rings. The Incas simply built steps into the walls by placing larger rocks that extended out from the side of the walls. These rocks had generally flat surfaces on the top, and when placed together in this way, served as a sort of dangerous stairwell. My guide hopped up and down these without thinking about it. I took my time and moved a little more slowly than he did.
